Castle of Saint-Maurice (5)A superb view awaits you at the corner of Esplanade Dufour. The esplanade was named after Guillaume-Henri Dufour (1787-1875), who was the main figure in the victory over the Sonderbund in the civil war that led to the birth of modern Switzerland. He was the author of the first accurate topographic map of the country and co-founder of the Red Cross. He also gave his name to the Dufour Peak in the Monte Rosa massif, which is the highest point in Switzerland at 4634m.
