Lonza RiverRising from the Langgletscher, between the Nesthorn (3822m) to the south and the Breithorn (3780m) to the north, the Lonza River crosses the entire Lötschental valley on a north-east-south-west axis, then curves due south from the village of Ferden, forming a long gorge, before flowing into the Rhône between Gampel and Steg, after a journey of just under 27km. Paradoxically, it is this very pure river that gave its name to a Swiss chemical and pharmaceutical company that polluted the soil and the Rhône for decades, necessitating a clean-up operation that has still not been completed...
