Church entranceOpposite the old bell tower, one discovers a surprising example of modern architecture combining glass, concrete, steel and wood... The church is, in fact, in its fourth incarnation. Little is known about the first church, built in the 13th century. Having become dilapidated and too small, it was replaced by a second church at the very beginning of the 18th century, but by the end of the 19th century this too was already in a state of serious disrepair and had become unsafe. In 1909, the collapse of the vaulted ceiling of the church in Nax (5km away) in the middle of Mass claimed 31 lives, and Mase decided to build a third church as a matter of urgency, whilst retaining the old bell tower. Consecrated in 1912, it aged poorly, and the 1946 earthquake made things worse. A fourth chapter in its history thus began in 1988...
