Meiringen cultivates the memory of the legendary detective imagined by the English writer: not only near the Reichenbach Falls, which can be reached by funicular, but also in the village, where you can even visit a museum dedicated to Sherlock Holmes.
Such a "cult" devoted to a novel character might seem suspicious: is there nothing else to attract visitors? Rest assured: Meiringen and the entire Haslital region have much more to offer!
In the village itself, you should see the beautiful St. Michael's Church, which is quite special with its double row of wooden pillars. Go down into the foundations too, where excavations have uncovered at least three successive buildings built in the Middle Ages. The present church, on the other hand, dates back to the Baroque period and was built at the end of the 17th century.
In the vicinity, in addition to the Reichenbach Falls (which are well worth a visit), you can also visit the Resti Tower, the only remnant of the castle of the same name, and the spectacular Aare Gorge (which, unfortunately, has an entrance fee).
Meiringen is at the heart of countless excursion possibilities: to the west, to the beautiful lakes of Brienz and Thun; to the north, over the Brünig Pass, to Obwalden and Central Switzerland; to the east, over the Susten Pass, to the Gotthard route; to the south, over the Grimsel Pass, to the Upper Valais or to the Graubünden via the Furka and Oberalp passes...
