The wine village of Meride is located on the first slopes of Monte San Giorgio, in the Mendrisiotto, the southernmost region of Ticino and of all Switzerland.
The Mendrisiotto, south of Ceresio (Lake Lugano), forms a kind of horn that spills over into northern Italy and Meride is less than 2km from the border as the crow flies.
The entire village has remained very authentic and is listed in the federal inventory of built sites to be protected in Switzerland. It consists of a long street and a few typical alleys.
In the centre of the village, next to the 16th century church of San Rocco, you can visit the Museum of Fossils of Meride. Enlarged and transformed by the Ticinese architect Mario Botta, it presents a unique collection of fossilized plants and animals from Monte San Giorgio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
