At an altitude of 1797 metres, the Rigi has been a popular destination for excursions since the 17th century, thanks to its position on Lake Lucerne and its impressive panoramic views over the whole of Central Switzerland.
Two Rigi Bahnen rack railways lead to the summit, one from Vitznau on Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee), the other from Arth on Lake Zug (Zugersee).
It is a very popular destination, both for enjoying the view and the fresh air, as well as for hiking in beautiful landscapes.
An old legend claims that the name Rigi comes from the Latin
regina montium, the "queen of mountains". It's just a legend, but as you stroll around you'll find that it's pretty well deserved!
