Grotte chapelle de Remonot
On the picturesque road that runs along the Doubs from Morteau to Pontarlier, this former hermitage has become a very surprising place of Catholic worship, as it is located in a cave at the foot of a cliff at the entrance to the Entreroches gorge.

This cave has been mentioned since the 12th century and has been used since the 8th century by hermits who came to evangelise the Haut-Doubs region. It became a chapel in the 17th century and, at the beginning of the 19th century, was accompanied by a parish church and a cemetery.

After the construction of the church in Remonot in 1832, the chapel was abandoned and the cave was transformed into a dyeing workshop, but it once again became a place of worship in 1863. The whole complex has been listed as a historic monument since 2009.

At the bottom of the cave is the source of the Gésambrune, a very short river that flows into the Doubs. This spring was once known for its beneficial effects. It occasionally floods and can partially inundate the chapel.

Behind the chapel, a footbridge leads to the bottom of the cave, but beware: the ground beyond is rather slippery!
