A very picturesque medieval town... and of course very touristy, located just opposite the city of Constance (Konstanz), on the northern bank of the Obersee. It is a (nearly) car-free town, well worth a visit, and can also be reached by regular ferries from Konstanz, on the border with Switzerland.
Famous for its castle, the town enjoys a privileged location on a plateau surrounded by vineyards and orchards with beautiful views of Lake Constance.
The castle ("Burg") built above the lower part of the town, according to an ancient legend, was built in the 7th century by the Merovingian king Dagobert I. Above it, in the upper part of the town, is the Neue Schloss, the new castle, which is in the Baroque style.
The town is a labyrinth of streets and alleys lined with beautiful old buildings, with vaulted passages and a magical atmosphere. A real dive into the past!
Meersburg is famous for its wine-growing due to its mild climate under the influence of Lake Constance. White wines made from the Mueller Thurgau grape variety, red wines made from Pinot Noir and Weissherbst grey wines, a type of rosé, are produced here.
Several tourist routes pass through Meersburg, the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, the Swabian Poets' Route and others. A ferry takes you there in 15 minutes from Konstanz and there are 3 motorhomes areas in the upper part of the town with a total of 88 places.
Despite the omnipresent tourist crowds, Meersburg is a must-see town and you won't regret your visit!
