The Stanserhorn is a mountain located in the canton of Nidwalden, peaking at 1,898 metres (6,227 ft) above sea level. This popular tourist destination can be reached from Stans by a funicular railway and a cable car.
Climbing the Stanserhorn is only possible from April to November, as the mountain is not a winter sports resort. Beautiful, easy hikes on safe paths are possible during the summer months, but you can also go there just to enjoy the view.
Until 1970, it was a funicular railway that climbed to the top. Built in three sections in 1893, it was the first railway to be powered by electricity and, at the time, it was also the steepest funicular and the first funicular without racks.
In 1970, a lightning strike caused a short circuit and the resulting fire did great damage, destroying the summit hotel. Since then, the hotel has become a restaurant and in 1975 two sections of the funicular were replaced by a cable car.
With the opening of the Rondorama in 2001, first revolving restaurant in Central Switzerland, and the opening of the CabriO in 2012, world's first double-decker aerial tramway, the Stanserhorn has become a destination offering a unique and unforgettable experience.
From the small town of Stans, you first take an authentic funicular from 1893 to the place called Kälti. Be patient, the funicular can only carry 32 passengers and in summer the queue overflows onto the road!
In Kälti you take the CabriO, a strange double-decker cable car. If you're lucky, you'll be able to climb the spiral staircase to the top floor, an open-air platform that makes you feel like you're flying.
A trip to the Stanserhorn, straddling the 19th and 21st centuries, is an experience you won't soon forget...
