Uri
Uri and the Gotthard region is a popular holiday destination. Goethe, Lord Byron, Queen Victoria and King Ludwig II of Bavaria all understood this. The canton stretches from the shores of Lake Lucerne to the snow-capped peaks, offering a wide variety of landscapes.

This is the land of the mythical hero William Tell, whose large statue stands on the Rathausplatz (town hall square) in Altdorf. This hero never existed, but his legend helped to unite Switzerland.

The Canton of Uri fascinates with its many facets: from the pleasant climate on the shores of Lake Lucerne to the authentic scenery of the villages and the snow-capped peaks above 3000m, the landscape is always surprisingly varied.

The lake region is a sports paradise with many opportunities for recreation. The 35 km long "Swiss Way" around the lake has developed into a popular excursion destination.

The numerous cable cars are also a special feature of the canton. Used by locals and tourists alike, they allow you to reach the sunny hills, panoramic terraces and mountain peaks in just a few minutes.

The wild, alpine environment of the Canton of Uri invites you to hike, cycle and run in the mountains in summer, while in winter the Urserntal, with 13 lifts connecting over 74km of slopes, is a ski area with hardly any snow problems, and the many valleys along the Reuss River are full of beautiful powder snow slopes as well as cross-country skiing and tobogganing runs.

Uri's typical hospitality makes it a great place to spend a holiday, and the many restaurants and inns offer both local specialities and fine gourmet cuisine.
